A basic distinction is made between complete and partial removal of the foreskin. In addition, different procedures are used, such as circumcision of the outer and/or inner foreskin, with different visual results (low & tight, high & tight, low & loose, high & loose). The most suitable method should be clarified with the treating doctor in a personal consultation. Circumcision surgery can be performed either under local or general anaesthetic and takes around 30 minutes. Possible but very rare complications include post-operative bleeding, infections, swelling, sensory disturbances or allergic reactions to the anaesthetic.

Male circumcision is the partial or complete removal of the foreskin of the penis. The reasons for circumcision are usually of a religious, cultural, hygienic or aesthetic nature and are rarely associated with a medical indication. Circumcision is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures worldwide.
Decision in favour of circumcision
Male circumcision performed in Judaism and Islam is mainly religiously motivated and represents the largest proportion worldwide. However, medical indications may also make circumcision advisable or necessary. Possible indications can be a narrowing of the foreskin (phimosis), paraphimosis, chronic inflammatory diseases of the glans and foreskin (balanitis) such as Zoon's disease (balanitis plasmacellularis) or carcinomas. Sexual sensation can also be impaired by circumcision. The sensitivity of the glans can often be reduced and thus counteract premature ejaculation. A surgical removal of the foreskin that is not acutely necessary should always be carried out on the basis of the patient's intrinsic conviction.
