Male circumcision performed in Judaism and Islam is mainly religiously motivated and represents the largest proportion worldwide. However, medical indications may also make circumcision advisable or necessary. Possible indications can be a narrowing of the foreskin (phimosis), paraphimosis, chronic inflammatory diseases of the glans and foreskin (balanitis) such as Zoon's disease (balanitis plasmacellularis) or carcinomas.
