Liposuction (liposuction)

Liposuction, also known as fat removal, is a popular surgical procedure that aims to remove excess fatty tissue from various areas of the body. This method is often used by people who have difficulty getting rid of certain fat deposits despite a healthy diet and regular exercise.

The procedure can be performed on almost any part of the body, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, back and chin. Liposuction not only offers a way to improve body contours, but can also significantly improve a patient's self-confidence and body image.

A comprehensive consultation is important before liposuction. This involves discussing the patient's individual goals, health history and expectations. The surgeon will select the most suitable technique to achieve optimal results.

Podcast on the topic of liposuction

Even people of normal weight suffer from genetic or age-related fat deposits that do not disappear with diets or exercise. Liposuction could make sense here. Dr Georg Noever from the Pyramide am See clinic discusses liposuction with Radio 1.

Additional skin tightening for poor skin elasticity

Skin elasticity plays a decisive role in achieving a satisfactory result after liposuction. After the procedure, the skin must adapt to the reduced volume and regress accordingly.
If skin elasticity is very weak or there is a lot of excess skin (e.g. after severe weight loss or after several pregnancies), recovery is often only possible with additional surgical skin tightening, which is, however, associated with scarring.

Skin tightening treatments are available for various areas of the body. They are also known as lifts and range from localised tightening operations on the abdomen, upper arms and thighs to the buttocks and full body lifts. The latter are real all-round corrections that are normally only required after extreme weight loss.

Skin tightening with Renuvion®

Renuvion® is preferably used as an additional tightening treatment after liposuction and is considered effective and gentle. No additional scars are required as the puncture holes from liposuction can be used. Renuvion® combines helium gas and radio frequency to create a plasma jet. The plasma jet can be used to tighten tissue from the inside.

The advantages:

  • No additional scars
  • No additional surgery

Renuvion® is an efficient and safe way of tightening the skin without a scalpel. You can find more information in our specialist article "Skin tightening with Renuvion® - a new technology for skin tightening"

Liposuction under general or local anaesthetic

The operation

On the day of the operation, you will arrive at the day clinic of the Centre for Plastic Surgery 45 minutes before the procedure. You will be prepared for the upcoming procedure by the nursing staff and your doctors. This includes the preparation of so-called before pictures and the marking of the liposuction area.

In a first step, a specially formulated liquid is injected into the areas to be treated to prevent bleeding. The solid fatty tissue is softened and can be gently suctioned out using a fine liposuction cannula.

Liposuction does not always require a general anaesthetic. Liposuction under local anaesthesia, known as tumescent local anaesthesia, is a good alternative for smaller procedures. The local injection of the tumescent solution makes the area to be treated insensitive to pain.

The procedure takes one to three hours. The incisions are tiny and barely visible after a few months. The appropriate compression garment is put on immediately after the operation. As liposuction is usually performed on an outpatient basis, you can leave the day clinic after just a few hours.

Aftercare for liposuction

You can shower again on the first day after the operation. For optimum results, you will need to wear compression tights or a compression girdle for at least 3 weeks during the day and at night (two weeks for liposculpture under local anaesthetic). The first check-up takes place one week after liposuction.

In the first few weeks after liposuction, the treated areas may still be swollen. Most of the swelling will disappear within the first four weeks. Complete normalisation of the tissue takes three to six months. It therefore takes patience until the final result of liposuction is available and can be assessed.

As liposuction removes a large number of fat cells, the results can be expected to be permanent if the weight remains stable. Liposuction is not a procedure for general weight reduction. The method is therefore unsuitable for general weight reduction.
