Breast augmentation with implants and autologous fat

An increased demand for breast augmentation with autologous fat has been noticeable for some time. Whether the desired result can be achieved with autologous fat and without an implant can be clarified in a personal consultation. Depending on the relevant factors, a combination procedure (implant and autologous fat) can also be considered.

Implants are still used for most breast augmentations. We only use the most modern, high-quality breast implants made of cross-linked silicone. They can no longer leak and give the breast more volume and firmness. Information from our implant manufacturer about the safety of breast implants can be found here.

During the consultation for breast augmentation with implants, the 3D simulation is an excellent tool for visualising the patient's wishes and ideas. With a detailed medical examination, our doctors work with the patient to develop a suitable individualised treatment method - with a view to achieving the best possible result.

The operation for breast augmentation

On the day of your breast augmentation, you will arrive at PSP, Plastic Surgery Pyramide or, if an overnight stay is desired, at Privatklinik Bethanien one and a half to two hours before the procedure. You will be prepared for the upcoming procedure by the nursing staff and your doctors. This includes taking so-called "before" pictures and drawing in the future breast contour. An experienced anaesthetist will inform you about the planned general anaesthetic.

The procedure itself requires a skin incision either in the crease below the breast, around the areola or alternatively in the armpit. The implant is inserted and then placed either above or below the pectoral muscles, depending on how the soft tissue has been procured.

Breast augmentations are usually performed under general anaesthetic on an outpatient basis and take around one and a half hours. For reasons of comfort, an overnight stay at the Privatklinik Bethanien in Zurich is possible afterwards

Aftercare for breast augmentation

Does breast augmentation leave visible scars?

The 4.5 to 5 centimetre long scar is located either in the breast crease, around the areola or in the armpit and is usually barely visible once it has completely healed. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are discussed together.

Do the implants have to be replaced after a certain time?

As with other procedures involving foreign materials and implants, it cannot be ruled out that breast augmentation will require follow-up treatment over the years. The reason for a possible replacement is not the durability of the implant, but the change in the patient's own body. The probability of replacement increases with age. However, a general replacement every ten years, as is sometimes recommended today, is not necessary. Based on experience with the latest silicone implants, it can be assumed that they will last a long time.

Which implants are most commonly used?

A basic distinction can be made between saline, hydrogel and silicone-containing implants. We only use the most modern, high-quality implants made of cross-linked silicone. The advantages: they can no longer leak and produce very beautiful, natural results.

Will I feel the implant after the breast augmentation?

At the beginning you will feel a slight sensation of pressure. If the implant is placed under the muscles, the pain may be slightly more pronounced in the first two weeks. For a few weeks, rarely a little longer, the sensation may be absent or altered. However, in most cases this normalises over time. Only rarely do patients complain of a certain foreign body sensation during the first six weeks. Very slim patients with little subcutaneous fatty tissue may experience a corresponding sensitivity. Normally, however, an implant is not noticeable from the outside.

What are the risks of breast augmentation?

In principle, every operation harbours certain risks (e.g. drug intolerance, haematoma, wound healing disorders, inflammation, scarring problems or sensitivity disorders). They also depend on the individual's state of health.

One specific risk is the formation of capsular fibrosis. This is a natural foreign body reaction that leads to the implant being encased in the body's own connective tissue. If this layer of tissue contracts, the implant is constricted, making the breast feel harder. In severe cases, corrective surgery is then performed to remove the scar tissue. This is often done in combination with an implant replacement.

The doctor will discuss possible risks with you during the consultation and preparatory discussions.

Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation does not affect the ability to breastfeed, as the implant is placed behind the milk-producing gland.

Do implants lead to an increased risk of breast cancer?

No. Extensive studies show that breast implants do not increase the risk of breast cancer.

Do I have to tell them if I am taking medication?

In any case, it is extremely important that you inform the doctor treating you about any illnesses and medication you are taking. Medication containing aspirin (e.g. Aspirin, Aspégic etc.) must not be taken for a fortnight before the operation. Such medication can lead to increased bleeding during the operation and delay the subsequent healing process. The doctor may decide not to perform a planned breast augmentation at any time if the risk of surgery is increased as a result of previous medication.

How long can I not work?

Depending on your occupation, you should expect to be unable to work for at least four days.

When can I do sport again?

After six to eight weeks, the traces of the operation will have largely healed so that you can slowly resume sporting activities. You can start light training such as walking or cycling around four weeks after the operation. Strength training, golf, tennis or swimming are only advisable after six weeks.

Are the costs covered by health insurance?

Breast augmentations are not covered by health insurance.
