Biostimulators | Sculptra & Radiesse

Biostimulants are a category of active ingredients that stimulate the body's own production of collagen, elastin and other structural proteins. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, which add volume immediately, biostimulants have a long-term effect by promoting skin renewal. They therefore ensure a lasting improvement in skin structure and skin quality.

How do biostimulants work?

After injection, the active ingredients are distributed in the tissue and stimulate the fibroblasts - the skin cells responsible for the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. This renews, tightens and firms the skin from the inside out. Compared to fillers, biostimulants often offer more natural, but slower results. The effect develops over several weeks to months, but often lasts for 1-2 years.

Who are biostimulants suitable for?

Biostimulators are ideal for people who want to improve their skin quality in the long term and achieve natural rejuvenation without excessive volume. They are particularly suitable for:

  • Patients between the ages of 35 and 60 who are beginning to notice signs of loss of volume and elasticity and want a natural improvement.
  • People with generalised sagging or "tired" skin who want an improvement in skin quality and not just a volume boost.
  • People who want long-term results and are willing to wait for the full effect.
  • People who prefer a more natural result to the immediate sometimes more noticeable effect of fillers. The gradual improvement provided by biostimulants is often more harmonious.
  • People with volume loss on the face or body.
  • Aesthetic treatments for the face, neck, décolleté, hands and body.

Radiesse® (calcium hydroxyapatite) is suitable for:

  • Chin line
  • Cheeks
  • hands
  • Neck and décolleté

Sculptra® (poly-L-lactic acid or PLLA) is suitable for:

  • Face, neck, décolleté
  • Upper arms, elbows, back of hands
  • buttocks, buttocks
  • Thighs and knees

Products used

Radiesse®

Radiesse® is a minimally invasive treatment that requires no surgical intervention and leaves no incisions or scars. By stimulating the body's own collagen and elastin production, lasting and natural results are achieved that continue to improve over several months. The method is ideal for modelling facial contours and restoring volume in various areas such as the neck, décolleté, hands and other areas of the body. The result looks natural and fresh without affecting facial expressions. The treatment can also be flexibly adapted to individual needs. As the recovery time is minimal, patients can usually return to their usual activities immediately after treatment.

Treatment

Treatment with Radiesse® is carried out on an outpatient basis and lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the treatment area. Firstly, a personalised treatment plan is drawn up. The skin in the affected area is then thoroughly cleansed before a local anaesthetic is administered for greater comfort. The specialist injects Radiesse® precisely into the desired areas such as the face, neck, décolleté, hands or other parts of the body. The aim of the treatment is to reduce wrinkles, build up volume and improve skin structure.

How many treatments are required?

Regular top-up treatments are recommended to maintain the results in the long term. Although
the effect is not permanent, the treatment has a comparatively long shelf life of up to two years.

Aftercare

Slight swelling, redness or minor bruising may occur, but these will subside on their own within a few days. Initial results are visible immediately after treatment and continue to develop over the following months. In most cases, patients can resume their social and professional commitments immediately after treatment.

What are the risks, side effects & contraindications?

As with any aesthetic treatment, temporary redness and swelling may occur and, in rare cases, granulomas. The breakdown of Radiesse® is individual and depends on the metabolism, whereby factors such as sun exposure and weight loss can accelerate the process. To minimise the risk of bruising, blood-thinning medication should be discontinued before treatment. It is also recommended to avoid smoking and intensive sun exposure in order to achieve optimum results.

Sculptra®

A biostimulator to improve skin quality

Collagen is the most important protein for our youthful appearance. A strong collagen scaffold is therefore the basis for keeping the skin wrinkle-free and elastic for longer. In order to achieve a long-term effect, the body's own collagen production must be stimulated again and again. Treatment with Sculptra® is suitable for this.

Sculptra® is not a filler (like hyaluronic acid) with an immediate effect, but a stimulant for the production of new collagen. For this reason, it takes some time before the final result is visible.

Sculptra® consists of poly-L-lactic acid (PLA), a substance that has been used successfully for over 30 years in various areas of medicine and surgery. It has a good safety profile and is approved by the FDA.

The injection of Sculptra® into the skin leads to an improvement in skin quality (elasticity and density of the tissue), which can achieve a firming and rejuvenating effect.

Treatment

The duration of treatment depends on the size of the area. Small areas are usually finished after just 30 minutes. For larger areas, the treatment can take up to 60 minutes.

How many treatments are necessary?

Most Sculptra® patients are very satisfied with the result after 2 to 3 treatments. Older patients usually need more treatments than younger patients. The treatments are carried out at intervals of four to six weeks.

In the first phase, the injected poly-L-lactic acid immediately fills the volume defects and wrinkles thanks to the water contained in the solution. Within a few days, the water contained in Sculptra® is absorbed by the body and the filling effect diminishes somewhat. The first tightening effects are visible after 6 to 8 weeks.

Approximately 18-24 months after the build-up with Sculptra®, there is a gradual loss of skin tone and elasticity due to the natural ageing process. If desired, the skin can be refreshed with Sculptra® at any time.

Aftercare

The following aftercare tips should be observed:

  • The treatment areas should be massaged for 5 minutes 2-3 times a day for the first 5 days.
  • Avoid sunlight and UV light until swelling and redness have subsided.

Combination with other procedures

Biostimulants can be combined with hyaluronic acid fillers, autologous blood therapy, laser therapies or botulinum toxin type A to achieve even more comprehensive skin rejuvenation. While biostimulants promote collagen formation, hyaluronic acid can provide targeted moisturisation and volume.

The combination of biostimulants with laser therapies leads to valuable synergy effects in aesthetic dermatology. While biostimulants chemically stimulate collagen and elastin production, lasers enhance this process through thermal stimulation and at the same time improve the absorption of active ingredients. Lasers are the ideal complement to biostimulants as they can also treat the skin's surface - they reduce pigmentation spots, pores and vascular changes and can also immediately tighten the skin. This combination therefore enables more comprehensive skin rejuvenation than either method alone, with both superficial and deep structural improvements.
