Wrinkle treatment with botulinum toxin A

Botulinum toxin type A is used to treat dynamic wrinkles caused by mimic muscle activity. This is a prescription-only substance that inhibits the transmission of impulses between the nerves and muscles so that the muscles can no longer contract. As a result, wrinkles caused by excessive muscle activity are smoothed out.

In Switzerland, botulinum toxin type A is authorised for the following types of wrinkles:

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows (glabella wrinkles)
  • Crow's feet / laugh lines around the eyes
  • Forehead wrinkles

Treatment procedure

Botulinum toxin is injected into the muscles with a fine needle and works locally.

The improvement is usually seen after 2 to 3 days, the full effect within one to two weeks and lasts up to 6 months. Physical exertion should be avoided on the day of treatment and the day after.

This type of wrinkle treatment is a well-tolerated method when carried out professionally and in the correct dosage. The most common undesirable side effects include minor bruising and slight swelling at the injection sites. They occur locally and are usually reversible, i.e. they disappear.

Wrinkle treatment with botulinum toxin should be avoided in the case of neuromuscular transmission disorders (e.g. myasthenia gravis), muscle diseases or allergies to the ingredients of the solution. It should also not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding or in the case of localised inflammation or skin diseases in the facial area.
