The LYMPHA technique

(Lymphatic microsurgical preventive healing approach)

The LYMPHA (Lymphatic Microsurgical Preventative Healing Approach) technique aims to prevent the occurrence of lymphatic complications associated with impaired lymphatic drainage.

The immediate restoration of lymphatic drainage offers both short and long-term benefits, in particular the prevention of the development of lymphocele and lymphoedema.

The LYMPHA technique is suitable for these patients

The LYMPHA technique is an option for patients undergoing ALND (axillary dissection) for breast cancer.

It is particularly recommended for patients who are at high risk of developing lymphoedema, such as those with

  • a large number of removed lymph nodes
  • obesity
  • Radiotherapy to the arm
  • Previous arm surgery

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common causes and what are the chances of success in preventing lymphoedema?

Studies have shown that the LYMPHA technique can effectively reduce the risk of developing lymphoedema. The procedure has been associated with a significant improvement in patients' quality of life.

Patients treated with the LYMPHA technique reported less swelling, pain and discomfort in their arm.

The LYMPHA technique has several benefits, including

  • Earlier detection of lymphoedema
  • Lower risk of developing lymphoedema
  • Reduced need for lymphoedema treatment
  • Improved quality of life

What is the field of application of the LYMPHA technique?

Originally intended for the primary prevention of arm lymphoedema following breast cancer and axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), it has also shown encouraging results in patients with trunk melanoma or other tumour/lymph node dissections throughout the body.

How does the LYMPHA technique work?

The LYMPHA technique is mainly based on multiple lymphatic bypasses (LVA), in which severed lymphatic vessels are reconnected to nearby veins. In this way, a bypass is created that enables the proper drainage of lymphatic fluid, even if some lymphatic vessels are damaged.

How does the procedure work?

The LYMPHA technique is usually performed under general anaesthetic. The surgeon first makes an incision to gain access to the lymphatic vessels and veins. The surgeon then identifies the severed lymphatic vessels and connects them to the nearby veins using microsurgical techniques.

In other procedures, healthy lymphatic tissue is transplanted into the affected area, combining the need for soft tissue reconstruction with the restoration of lymphatic drainage.

What is the aftercare like following the procedure?

After the LYMPHA procedure, the patient must wear a compression sleeve for several weeks to reduce swelling and promote healing. The patient must also complete a special exercise programme to improve lymphatic drainage.

What are the risks and side effects of the LYMPA technique?

The LYMPHA technique is a safe procedure, but there are (as with any surgical treatment) some risks and side effects, including

  • Bleeding
  • infection
  • Damage to nerves
  • Seroma (accumulation of fluid under the skin)
  • Failure of the bypass
