Spider veins

Spider veins are fine, reddish to bluish shimmering veins that appear just below the surface of the skin: they usually appear on the legs (especially in the calf, thigh or ankle area), but can also occur on the face.

There are several established medical procedures available for the removal of spider veins. Which method is suitable depends on the severity and skin type.

Origin | Causes

They are caused by an enlargement of small skin veins and are considered a mild form of varicose veins (medical term: spider veins). Although they are usually harmless to health, many people find them aesthetically unpleasant.

Spider veins occur more frequently in women, often due to hormonal factors or a genetically predisposed weakness of the connective tissue. Other triggers are lack of exercise, prolonged standing or sitting, obesity, pregnancy or a weak venous system.

Treatments

Laser therapy

Laser therapy, in particular with the long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser, is a proven method for treating spider veins. Targeted pulses of light are emitted which heat the blood in the vein, damaging the vessel walls and thus permanently closing the spider veins. This method is particularly suitable for smaller, superficial vessels.

Other procedures

Another procedure is vein sclerotherapy. A sclerosing agent is injected directly into the affected vein using a fine needle. This leads to internal adhesion of the vein, which is then broken down by the body.

Surgical procedures are used for more pronounced varicose veins. Camouflage make-up, which reliably covers the visible veins, is suitable for short-term optical concealment.

We do not offer these other procedures.

Aftercare

Regardless of the method chosen, aftercare requires discipline and patience. A period of rest is necessary after laser treatment. Sun, sauna and hot baths should be avoided for about 6 weeks to allow for optimal healing.

The treated areas may be reddened and sensitive for a short time. Minor bruising is possible. Visible results often only appear after several weeks. Several treatments are often necessary to achieve an optimal cosmetic result.

For long-term prevention, we recommend regular exercise (e.g. walking, cycling, swimming), avoiding prolonged sitting or standing, wearing flat shoes and, if necessary, wearing compression stockings for patients at risk.

Prices

Frequently asked questions about spider veins

Are spider veins dangerous?

As a rule, spider veins are harmless and do not cause any discomfort. However, they are occasionally an indication of underlying venous insufficiency.

Do spider veins disappear by themselves?

No, existing spider veins will not disappear without targeted treatment. Creams or tablets alone are not effective enough.

Can spider veins come back?

Yes, new spider veins can form, especially if you have a genetic predisposition or persistent risk factors - even after successful treatment.

How many sessions are necessary?

Yes, especially with renewed exposure to the sun or hormonal changes. A relapse is possible even after successful therapy.

Is an ultrasound scan useful beforehand?

Yes, a duplex sonography (ultrasound examination) is often recommended before starting treatment in order to rule out deeper vein diseases.

Which sports help against spider veins?

Endurance sports such as jogging, cycling or swimming promote blood circulation and prevent spider veins. Daily exercise (e.g. 10,000 steps a day) is also very helpful.

Who pays for the treatment?

As spider veins are usually a cosmetic problem, the treatment costs are not covered by health insurance.
