Scar treatment

Scars can cause aesthetic and functional impairments, especially on visible parts of the body such as the face.

Types of scars

There are various types of scars that differ in their appearance and formation. Pathological scars can basically be divided into three categories.

  • Atrophic sc ars are sunken and occur when too little connective tissue is formed. They are typical of acne or chickenpox and appear as dimple-like depressions.
  • Hypertrophic scars are raised and usually reddish in colour. They are caused by excessive connective tissue formation, but remain within the original wound boundaries.
  • Keloids are scars characterised by excessive growth of scar tissue beyond the edge of the wound. They initially appear as reddish connective tissue growths that become dark red and firm over time. They often occur in areas of the body where the skin is under tension, such as the ear, breastbone, shoulder or upper back. Keloids can cause various symptoms such as pain, itching and a feeling of tightness.

Treatments

The costs for filler injections, laser therapies and deep needling are not covered by health insurance. The amount is to be paid on site directly after the treatment.

Laser therapy

The treatment of scars includes various therapeutic approaches, with laser treatments playing an important role.

Modern fractional laser therapies have established themselves as an effective method for improving the appearance of scars. The fractional CO2 laser, for example, generates microscopically small heat columns deep into the skin. These targeted microdamages stimulate the skin's self-healing powers and promote the formation of new, normal collagen, which leads to a significant improvement in the appearance of the skin.

Laser treatment is particularly effective for various types of scars, including acne scars, surgical scars, accident scars and burn scars. It offers the advantage of a painless treatment with a short recovery time and long-lasting results. Another advantage of laser treatment is that there is no long downtime and deeper layers of tissue can be reached.

How many treatments are required?

In general, 3 to 6 laser treatments are required. For more complex cases or pronounced scars, more than 6 sessions may be necessary to achieve the desired result.

Injections

Hyaluronic acid, autologous fat or collagen-stimulating active ingredients are injected into the scar region to smooth the appearance of the skin and promote tissue regeneration. This method is generally painless and requires several sessions, depending on the active ingredient.

Treatment of painful scars

In the case of itchy, painful or persistently reddened scars after wound healing, we recommend the use of silicone gels, injection treatments with anti-inflammatory agents (corticosteroid injections) and laser therapies to alleviate the symptoms.

Deep needling in combination with radiofrequency

This method stimulates skin regeneration through small needle pricks in combination with radio frequency waves, which move and heat the water molecules in the dermis (dermis). The small mechanical injuries in combination with the targeted heating of the skin tissue trigger a biological reaction cascade in which collagen and elastin are newly formed.

Surgical scar treatment

Surgical scar correction may be recommended for deep or conspicuous scars.

If necessary, our specialists combine various laser treatments and injections to optimise the appearance of the skin. However, prevention is the first step in minimising scarring.

Aftercare

The first priority is consistent sun protection with a sun protection factor of 50+ for at least one year after the procedure. This prevents pigmentation disorders, which occur particularly in freshly treated skin areas.

Special silicone plasters in combination with regular gentle massages or moisturising gels can support scar healing.

Particular attention should be paid to signs such as thickening, persistent pain or noticeable redness. If these symptoms occur, it is advisable to see the treating doctor promptly to recognise and treat complications such as the formation of keloids at an early stage.

The aim of all measures is a scar that becomes paler, softer and less noticeable over time - both cosmetically and functionally.

Frequently asked questions about scar treatment

What methods of scar correction do you offer?

We offer a wide range of laser treatments, injections (including corticosteroids and fillers) and surgical scar corrections. These are individually tailored to your scar.

When does surgical correction make sense?

Surgical scar correction is useful for functional restrictions (e.g. restricted movement due to scar contractures over joints), chronic pain or non-healing wound areas, particularly conspicuous scars or if other methods are not sufficiently effective.

Is the treatment painful?

The sensation of pain varies depending on the method. Some treatments only require a local anaesthetic, while surgical procedures may require a stronger anaesthetic.

Can laser therapies also be used preventively, e.g. after an operation to beautify the scar?

Especially in aesthetically sensitive areas such as the face and décolleté, lasers are a useful addition to post-operative aftercare. Preventive laser treatments accelerate wound healing, alleviate discomfort such as pain and reduce scarring.
