Skin cancer screening

Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. Black skin cancer in particular, melanoma, can be dangerous if it is recognised too late. Regular check-ups enable changes in moles and pigment spots to be recognised at an early stage and significantly increase the chances of recovery.

Birthmark check procedure

The examination usually includes a systematic full body check, including the scalp. Conspicuous pigmentation marks are assessed with a dermatoscope. After the examination, the specialist will discuss whether observation, further checks or, if necessary, removal is required.

Another important aspect of the specialist examination is safety before aesthetic treatments, for example laser treatments for pigmentation marks. Only after a specialist assessment can it be ensured that no conspicuous or potentially dangerous skin changes are treated unnoticed. The examination is painless and usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Observe changes

Patients should pay attention to changes in their skin. The ABCDE rule serves as a guide:

  • A: Asymmetry
  • B: irregular border
  • C: different colour
  • D: dynamics (diameter/development): Spot grows, is larger than 5 mm or changes in shape, colour or thickness
  • E: Elevation

Target group for prevention

Risk groups are people with a light skin type, many pigmentation marks, a family history of skin cancer, frequent sunburns or sunbed use. These patients should be checked more regularly.

Advantages of a specialist examination

Specialists in dermatology detect abnormalities at an early stage, document changes and can arrange a histopathological examination if necessary. This significantly reduces the risk of skin cancer developing undetected. In addition, the specialist examination ensures that aesthetic treatments such as lasers can be carried out safely, as it is clarified in advance that there are no dangerous skin changes.
