Spider veins are caused by an enlargement of small skin veins and are considered a mild form of varicose veins (medically: spider vein varicose veins). Although they are usually harmless to health, many people find them aesthetically unpleasant.

Spider veins occur more frequently in women, often due to hormonal factors or a genetically predisposed weakness of the connective tissue. Other triggers are lack of exercise, prolonged standing or sitting, obesity, pregnancy or a weak venous system.

Laser therapy

Laser therapy, in particular with the long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser, is a proven method for treating spider veins. Targeted pulses of light are emitted which heat the blood in the vein, damaging the vessel walls and thus permanently closing the spider veins. This method is particularly suitable for smaller, superficial vessels.

Other procedures

Another procedure is vein sclerotherapy. A sclerosing agent is injected directly into the affected vein using a fine needle. This leads to an internal adhesion of the vein, which is then broken down by the body. Surgical procedures are used for more pronounced varicose veins.

Regardless of the method chosen, aftercare requires discipline and patience. A period of rest is necessary after laser treatment. Sun, sauna and hot baths should be avoided for about 6 weeks to allow for optimal healing.

The treated areas may be reddened and sensitive for a short time. Minor bruising is possible. Visible results often only appear after several weeks. Several treatments are often necessary to achieve an optimal cosmetic result.

For long-term prevention, we recommend regular exercise (e.g. walking, cycling, swimming), avoiding prolonged sitting or standing, wearing flat shoes and, if necessary, wearing compression stockings for patients at risk.
