THE LYMPHA TECHNIQUE (LYMPHATIC MICROSURGICAL PREVENTIVE HEALING APPROACH)

WHAT DOES THE LYMPHA TECHNIQUE DO?

The LYMPHA technique (Lymphatic Microsurgical Preventative Healing Approach) aims to prevent the occurrence of lymphatic complications associated with impaired lymphatic drainage.

The immediate restoration of lymph flow offers both short and long-term benefits, in particular to prevent the development of lymphoceles and lymphoedema.

WHO IS THE LYMPHA TECHNIQUE SUITABLE FOR?

The LYMPHA technique is an option for patients undergoing an axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) for breast cancer.

It is particularly recommended for patients who are at high risk of developing lymphoedema, such as people:

  • Having a large number of lymph nodes removed
  • With obesity
  • Having radiotherapy on the arm
  • Who have had previous surgery on their arm

HOW SUCCESSFUL IS THE TREATMENT IN PREVENTING LYMPHOEDEMA?

Studies have shown that the LYMPHA technique can effectively reduce the risk of developing lymphoedema. The procedure was associated with a significant improvement in patients’ quality of life.

Patients treated with the LYMPHA technique reported less swelling, pain and discomfort in their arm.

The LYMPHA technique has several advantages, including:

  • Earlier detection of lymphoedema
  • Lower risk of developing lymphoedema
  • Less need for lymphoedema treatment
  • Improved quality of life

WHEN IS THE LYMPHA TECHNIQUE USED?

Originally intended for the primary prevention of lymphoedema of the arm after breast cancer surgery and axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), the LYMPHA technique has also shown encouraging results in patients with melanoma on their trunk or other tumour/lymph node dissections throughout the body.

HOW DOES THE LYMPHA TECHNIQUE WORK?

The LYMPHA technique primarily comprises multiple lymphatic anastomoses (LVAs), in which lymphatic vessels are connected to nearby veins. In this way, a bypass is created that allows the lymph fluid to drain properly, even if some lymphatic vessels are damaged.

HOW IS THE LYMPHA TECHNIQUE PERFORMED?

The LYMPHA technique is usually performed under a general anaesthetic. The surgeon first makes an incision to gain access to the lymphatic vessels and veins. The surgeon then identifies the transected lymphatic vessels and connects them to nearby veins using microsurgical techniques.

In other procedures, healthy lymphatic tissue is transplanted into the affected area so that soft tissue reconstruction is combined with the restoration of lymphatic drainage.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

After the LYMPHA procedure, you will need to wear a compression garment for several weeks to reduce swelling and promote healing. You will also be given a special exercise programme to improve lymphatic drainage.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS OF THE LYMPHA TECHNIQUE?

The LYMPHA technique is a safe procedure, but as with any surgical treatment, there are some risks and side effects, including:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Damage to nerves
  • Seroma (accumulation of fluid under the skin)
  • Failure of the bypass

What are the advantages of treatment at our centre?

Technically challenging procedures such as the surgical treatment of lymphoceles should always be carried out by experienced specialists. This enables the complication rate to be reduced to an absolute minimum and greatly increases the likelihood of success.

Our specialist Professor Mario Scaglioni has many years of experience and a great deal of expertise in lymphatic surgery.

He will take comprehensive, expert and personal care of you and your needs and concerns.
