DENERVATION: SURGERY FOR PAIN RELIEF

Facet joint denervation | Denervation of the cluneal nerve | Benefits | Risks | Consultations

Denervation, also known as neurotomy, neurolysis or sclerotherapy, is a medical procedure in which the nerves that carry pain signals from the spine are temporarily interrupted or permanently destroyed using high-frequency energy.

Denervation is used when conservative treatments are no longer promising alternatives to provide relief from back pain.

FACET JOINT DENERVATION

Indications:
Facet joint denervation is recommended for people with chronic pain in the facet joints of the spine, often caused by arthritis or degenerative changes in the joints.

Procedure:
During the procedure, radio waves or heat are applied to the nerve endings that transmit pain signals from the facet joints to the brain. This temporarily interrupts these pain signals.

Duration of positive effects:
The positive effects can last between six months and two years or longer and provide significant pain relief during this time.

DENERVATION OF THE CLUNEAL NERVE

Indications:
This procedure is often recommended for patients with chronic pelvic pain caused by disorders of the sacroiliac joint.

Procedure:
A thin needle is used to apply heat or specific chemical substances to the cluneal nerve, which interrupts the transmission of pain signals to the pelvic area.

Duration of positive effects:
Results can vary, but many people experience significant pain relief for several months after the procedure.

ADVANTAGES OF DENERVATION PROCEDURES

  • Significant reduction of chronic pain without continuous use of painkillers.
  • Minimally invasive. Denervation procedures require only small incisions or punctures.
  • The improved quality of life enables people to resume their daily activities without constant pain.

RISKS AND CONSIDERATIONS

Denervation procedures are generally safe, but as with any medical procedure, there are risks such as infection, bleeding or allergic reactions to the anaesthesia.

The effectiveness of the procedures can vary from person to person; not all patients experience the same results.

It is crucial to discuss all the details with your specialist before undergoing denervation. A thorough medical assessment, taking into account the patient’s individual conditions, is essential to determine the appropriate procedure and the expected benefits.
