Ear, nose and throat surgery A new technology, the cold light endoscope, revolutionised endoscopic surgery in the 1960s. “Keyhole surgery” was born, and ear, nose and throat surgery benefited in particular. The narrow and well-concealed areas in the head and throat – particularly the paranasal sinuses – make surgical access extremely difficult. With cold light endoscopy it became possible to perform gentle, minimally invasive surgery of the paranasal sinuses and larynx. Microscopes, endoscopes, computer navigation, etc., combined with improved light sources, modern monitoring and gentle anaesthetics that can be used with low blood pressure have revolutionised surgery in this area over the last 20 years. Many of the conditions treated by ENT surgeons are based on individual perception and are thus very subjective. A consultation with a specialist will show to what extent real improvement can be achieved through ear, nose and throat surgery or when simple, conservative interventions will suffice.
