Some women have asymmetrical breasts, i.e. unequal or unevenly shaped breasts, and in some cases, the nipples may also be malformed. A combined procedure is usually performed to remedy this – simultaneous breast augmentation or breast reduction in conjunction with breast lift surgery.
Inverted nipples
In some women the outward tip and normally slightly protruding part of the nipple does not extend outwards but is instead retracted. The nipple looks slightly drawn in. Inverted nipples of this kind cannot be drawn out even by physical stimulation. They are usually caused by the milk duct system being too short. One or both nipples may be affected.
Inverted nipples can be corrected by surgical intervention, if other non-surgical treatment methods prove ineffective. This kind of corrective procedure is particularly recommended if the malformation causes psychological problems or has an adverse effect on the woman’s self-esteem.
The relatively simple intervention is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic. A corrective procedure of this kind will not normally be covered by health insurance, as it is considered aesthetic surgery. The ability to breastfeed is forfeited as a result of this operation and some loss of feeling also frequently occurs.
